Commercial catering engineers play a vital role in keeping professional kitchens running safely and efficiently. From restaurants and hotels to hospitals and schools, these specialists install, maintain, and repair large-scale cooking equipment. But what does it take to become one?


1. Relevant Technical Training Most commercial catering engineers begin with a background in engineering or a related trade. Common routes include apprenticeships in gas engineering, electrical engineering, or catering equipment servicing. These pathways provide hands-on experience alongside classroom learning—essential for developing practical skills.


2. Gas Safety Certification For those working with gas appliances, certification is crucial. In the UK, engineers must be registered with Gas Safe and hold specific commercial catering qualifications (such as COMCAT certifications). These demonstrate competence in working safely with commercial gas equipment like ovens, grills, and fryers.


3. Electrical Knowledge

Modern catering equipment often combines gas and electrical components. A solid understanding of electrical systems is therefore highly valuable. While not always mandatory, qualifications such as City & Guilds in electrical installation or maintenance can significantly boost employability.


4. Health and Safety Awareness

Working in busy commercial kitchens comes with risks. Engineers must understand health and safety regulations, including ventilation, fire safety, and food hygiene standards. Many employers look for candidates with relevant safety training or certifications.


5. Problem-Solving Skills and Experience

Beyond formal qualifications, practical experience is key. Engineers need strong diagnostic skills to quickly identify faults and carry out effective repairs. This often comes from on-the-job training, apprenticeships, or years of industry experience.
